Tips and Tricks
The following tips may be updated as we learn more about riding
e-bikes. Please send corrections and suggestions to
warren@durhamebikeassociation.org.
General
Dressing
for the weather.
- Wear extra (and windproof/waterproof) clothes when riding
in temperatures below 20 degrees (C); riding is the same
as sitting in a breeze without any body movement
to keep you warm.
- If you are riding a scooter style e-bike in a light rain
you may only need to wear a waterproof jacket-- your legs will only get
slightly wet on the top of your thighs.
Maintaining
your battery.
These tips in particular are subject to revision as we get more
technical information.
- Recharge your battery after each use or at least at the end
of the day; sealed lead acid batteries will last longer if
they are kept close to full charge.
- Bring your battery inside if the temperature is going to
drop below 0 degrees (C). Allowing the battery to freeze can
cause damage to the plates inside.
- When the battery is not in use for longer periods
of time (such as in the winter), it needs to be charged at least every
20 days; simple way to manage this: buy a 7 day
timer and set it to turn on the charger for a few hours every week.
